Creepy Line Part 2 - due EOC

Reflections from part 1

Reflections

reflection: the creepy line goes into detail on the control of Google and Facebook. it starts with how google started as just this search engine, but once smartphones came around google began to spread onto multiple platforms. They went from just queries to google maps and google docs and all of these little products that they ultimately use to make money from our data. I didn't even realize that I was on google chrome. They then moved onto Facebook and how Facebook controls what we see. an example is then purposefully not putting conservative articles on the trending pages. I watched the social dilemma last week and this was a great video.

reflection: Google and Facebook manipulate people everyday. Google crosses the creepy line every day. They construct a profile of all their users, then they target their ads through your profile. They create or change billions of peoples' opinions. The creepy line is being crossed and getting creepier every day.

reflection: Google and Facebook keeps track of what we search. They also make money by selling what we search. Google has a saying " don't be evil. Now why would a company even need a saying like that , unless they have done something close to being evil. Facebook went to trial for suppressing Conservative views on Facebook. All in all you should be careful of what you search, and what information you are given for that search.

reflection: Large tech companies know way more about us than we know. They know what we search so that they can target ads to us. The google algorithms are made to filter what they deem as "bad". They use this filter to push their beliefs. The media and internet are very biased. The companies can push their agenda as they chose. The fact that 68% of millennials get their news from social media shows the influence that social media has on people.

reflection: A lot of businesses are using the surveillance business model to make money. The surveillance business model makes it so the business know what you like so they can target you. Nothing on the internet is free, for example, when you search for something on google, google is not giving the information to you for free. Google uses your searches to be able to target you using ads that they think you will like. Google kind of does inception, like the movie but not really but kind of.

reflection: Companies are developing apps just to collect data from people. They create these apps so they could sell their users data to other people. They never define evil so they can just get away with the data collecting and data selling. People are too relaying on google and facebook. They need to realize this and put a stop to this.

reflection: We do not really know most of what the internet does. We forget that there are companies at the top that use and sell our information for monetary gain. We mean very little to them, other than our potential for making them money. We are only starting to truly come to terms with the power Google, or Facebook, or any other large corporation with influence on the internet has over each aspect of our individual lives.

This was sent to the staff by the library

Welcome!  We wanted to take a moment to review our library procedures and the resources that we have available. Please visit our BHS Library webpage for information and links to resources.

  • HOURS: Library hours are 7:10 am – 3:00 pm.
  • SEATING: To comply with social distancing guidelines, we have limited seating. Students will not be allowed to sit on the floor or move the chairs or tables.  The library lab is closed.
  • SENDING STUDENTS
    • Before and After School:
      • Students are only allowed to print and check out books during this time. Students will not be allowed to sit and visit.
    • During the School Day:
      • Students are required to visit their study hall teacher for attendance purposes and obtain permission to visit the library.
      • Students are required to stay the entire period. They will be given a pass to visit their locker or restroom.  If a student does not want to stay the entire class period, they should make plans to stop by before or after school or during lunch.
      • We are happy to have up to 2 students from a class visit the library.
      • Please encourage students to not abuse their visitation privileges by reminding them that they are expected to be working on something or reading while they are here.
      • Due to limited seating, if we should ever be full, we may have to send students back to you.
  • STUDENT SIGN-IN: Upon entering the library, students will be required to sign-in.  To reduce student interaction, students will sign themselves into the library via a Google Form.  Please check the Library Attendance spreadsheet (requires a @myplace.wcs.edu account) often.  We highly encourage you to monitor this sign-in daily to confirm student whereabouts by checking their sign-in times. Please let us know if you have any troubles.
  • PRINTING: To allow for social distancing, we have only 8 desktops from which to print.

NEED INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES? With the emphasis on informational text, TEL https://tntel.info/ is a wonderful resource. The resource found here provides more information about Gale’s reading levels and Lexile levels. Please let us know if you would like a demo of how to search effectively within TEL. We would be more than happy to demo during a department meeting.

NEED BOOKS/DVDs? If there are any resources that you need for your courses this school year, please let us know.

We look forward to working with you this year!
