From our technician

I am seeing 2 very common tickets right now from students Zooming and wanted to send out some explanation for why they show up so you guys can provide a quick answer.

  1. No camera option in Zoom
  2. “Authorized users only” when trying to join meeting

The first issue is caused by Zoom going into low bandwidth mode. This is caused by either a weak internet signal or the speed of the internet not being able to handle translating the video in Zoom. While students cannot usually affect the speed of their internet they can usually find a better spot in the house closer to their router that will provide a better signal. Once they’ve done so, they’ll have to leave the meeting and rejoin to refresh the signal and if it’s strong enough the video option will return.

The second issue can be cause by 2 things. The most common cause is the student not logging into classlink and just going directly to schoology through a bookmark they’ve created. When this is done Zoom cannot verify them as a student and they won’t be allowed to join the Zoom. They can simply log into classlink to resolve this issue. The second thing that can cause this is Zoom will hold onto the old meeting information from the students last class and then will not let them join them next class because it’s still trying to join a Zoom meeting that isn’t open anymore. This usually happens when the old meeting Zoom tab is left open in chrome and it just keeps this information cached. This can be resolved by closing Zoom meeting tabs(not the Zoom profile tab) and clearing cache in chrome(instructions are included in the chromebook troubleshooting doc here).

As always you can direct students having issues to turn in a student helpdesk ticket through their classlink dashboard or to look at the troubleshooting tips listed in the document on the BHS website.
