Lesson 9 : The need for addressing. Battleship with the Internet Simulator.

Overview

Students invent a protocol (similar to the real Internet Protocol IP) to encode the necessary elements for playing a simplified, but multi-person, game of Battleship. Students first play unplugged, then using a new version of the Internet Simulator configured to allow a user to broadcast messages to a group.

Vocab

  • IP Address - A number assigned to any item that is connected to the Internet.
  • Packets - Small chunks of information that have been carefully formed from larger chunks of information.
  • Protocol - A set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices.

Fri 4-Oct

Binary Battleship Tournament

One member from each group will develop a common protocol for the game. The protocol will be written on two boards.

When your ship is sunk - you are out. Begin working on Lesson 9 questions.
When you are the last ship floating, add you name to the board of winners.
Discrepancies must be settled in the hall.

Round 1 - groups are assigned - everyone plays

1. No talking during the match.

2. Can fire one shot at one opponent and then rotate shot.

3. Must agree on the outcome.

4. Winner writes their name on the board.

Round 2 - 9 winners will be assigned into 3 groups based on finishing in round 1. Protocol will need modified.

Round 3 - final three players. Protocol will need modified.
